Freiburg im Breisgau

Urban data platform for smart city model project

Together with our partner Benz + Walter, Accso is developing and operating an urban data platform for the city of Freiburg for its smart city model project.

The city of Freiburg has taken a significant step toward becoming a smart city with the DATEN:RAUM:FREIBURG project. The goal was to develop a platform that collects, processes, and makes data usable across administrative departments. This central data platform enables the city administration to analyze data across departments and make it accessible to employees and interested citizens.

Freiburg as a smart city model project

The DATEN:RAUM:FREIBURG project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development, and Construction as part of the "Smart City Model Projects" funding guideline and will run until March 2026.

Core components of the project

  1. Data catalog: Provides an overview of all existing data sets, making it easier to find and use data.
  2. Data integration module: Ensures the connection of internal data sources with and without caching of the connected data for short-term and continuous queries.
  3. Identity management: Ensures that connected users in the city have access to protected areas of the platform via single sign-on.
  4. IoT platform: Connection and management of sensors distributed throughout the city to record conditions in the urban area, such as black ice or parking space occupancy.
  5. BI and reporting component: Automates the analysis and visualization of data for the city administration.

Participation and transparency for the citizens of Freiburg

DATEN:RAUM:FREIBURG is a prime example of innovative urban development and shows how data can be used effectively to improve urban life.

The project lays the foundation for future smart city initiatives in Freiburg. The platform is scalable and expandable to support future applications. The platform also offers dashboards for citizens to visualize data and create transparency. The insights and technologies gained will also benefit other cities.
